XFce release management

Release Team

This is a list of people willing to help with XFce releases. If you want to help aswell, send mail to the xfce4-dev mailinglist.

Botsie suggested that we should have a release manager who has the final responsibility for release. I consider this to be a good idea. The release manager should be elected from the release team members. The release manager will coordinate the work of the release team.

Responsibilites of the release team

Here is a list of responsibilities of the release team:

  1. Test the release for one or two days (compiling and running on various machines)
  2. Plan announcements and prepare the announcement texts
  3. Create packages for various distributions
  4. Send release announcements

Between release, the release team should do public relations related work, in that it tries to make XFce more popular and should help new users solving their problems with XFce (if not related to a software bug), e.g. on IRC, mailinglists and newsgroups. We could probably also establish a web forum for XFce.

Another helpful thing would be to have more "Tips&Trick" for xfce4-toys/xfce4-tips (Olivier would like to use xfce4-tips in XFce 4.0).

And last but not least, we always need people helping with the website, e.g. translators and/or collecting usefull information from IRC and the mailinglist to put into the NEWS or FAQ.

Therefore the name release team might not be appriorate. We should find a better name.

Why?

  • First of all, there are lots of people around who would like to contribute to XFce in a non programming fashion. Heres the chance to do something important for XFce.
  • Secondly, we lack developers (only 5 active developers); therefore the developers should concentrate on coding and bugfixing.
